There are a few places I completely fall in love with when I’m traveling.
Paris was one of them. Kamakura happens to be another.
This charming town southwest of Tokyo — home to just 174,000 people — has everything you could want: a local train, friendly neighbors, scenic walks, cool breezes and a beach with surf.
It’s close enough to the bright lights of Ginza, the shopping in Roppongi, and the nightlife in Shibuya. But it’s far enough away that you don’t feel like you’re in a big city, you’re not stressed, you can breathe.
Here’s why I fell so hard for this little town:
Finally, water!

great post! picture #31 is of a lady making “kintsuba” this is by dipping blocks of sweet potato yokan or anko (sweet bean paste) into a thin batter then cooking them on all sides.
THANKS FOR THAT! I didn’t know what the heck was going on — and my Japanese-speaking friend was halfway up the street. 🙂
Great pics!
Thanks!! And yep, onsen next time. I’ve been before so I was OK not to go. But some of my fellow travelers hadn’t. They woulda loved it.
Next time you got to try the hot springs.
gorgeous area. another to add to my list.
what’s the water temp there? have to wear wetsuit?
One of the surfers said it’s 17 degrees Celsius. I’m pretty sure that’s cold. Guys are wearing 3 mil suits. But it really warms up in the summer.
So beautiful! I’m not positive, but I think picture #26 are azaleas, not hydrangeas. Love these photos!
You’re probably right. I worked on a flower shop and I’m terrible at identifying them!
it is called shakunage and it is a type of azalea
The senbei looked sooooo good!
You should be a travel writer!
If I could get a gig doing that for a living, I’d jump at it. Until then, I’ll just pretend 🙂
Amen sistah, amen.
