I had a few errands to run this morning and drove right past an okazu-ya I had seen before but never tried.
Instead of doing the usual and saying, “I’ll check it out next time,” I turned around and pulled in the parking lot. I wasn’t hungry, but I decided to check out the offerings at Caryn’s Okazu-ya on Young Street.
It’s been around for more than 20 years, now on its third owner. And the menu looked good: shrimp tempura, mochiko chicken, teriyaki hot dog, Okinawan shoyu pork.
I’m glad I stopped.
This is going to be my New Year’s resolution of sorts, to stop and try and not wait until later.
Think of all the restaurants and shops and places you always say you’ll check out — and years go by and you’ve still never seen or done it.
Do it.
Trust me, you won’t regret it. Because even if it turns out not as great as you had expected, at least now you know.

Hey Cat … wow!!! … that’s a lot of food for someone who “wasn’t hungry” … haha!!! … was that plate shared by two??? …
… good idea … your “resolution” kind of reminds me of that old saying – “No better time than the present” … or something like that … and I agree …
… but can’t say I’ll be following in your footsteps anytime soon … *sigh* … I’m a lazy procrastinator …
… I gotta remind myself … I have the rest of my life to be lazy … some opportunities may not pass my way again …
Hey, I wasn’t THAT hungry — but I’m always hungry 🙂
Hello Cat! you are exactly right, I always say that too, I’ll check it out the next time but the next time never comes.
I figure you may not get the chance again, so may as well do it now. Later is for later.
Did that a lot when I lived there before. Some real gems in Hawaii if you aren’t afraid to try things out.
The thing is you have to STOP and do it at that very moment. Life gets in the way of all the fun things we want to do 🙂
I like your new goal 🙂
Hey, it’s doable! 🙂
I usually receive as Christmas gifts a one or two gift cards or gift certificates (paper still exists) for restaurants I like. I never seem to have them with me when I have the urge to use them and access to that food. My goal this year is to use by the end of January the two I received last week as gifts. That way, I can’t lose them or forget about consuming the gifts. I know I will eat in these places anyway. They are favs.
That’s an awesome goal! Do it! You won’t regret it!
I like your goal!
If you aim low — or within reach — you can achieve anything! LOL
