Melissa Chang made me do it.
I’m talking about eating Vegemite, an Australian food spread made from yeast extract. It’s served everywhere here and used in sandwiches, on toast, even as a filling in pastries.
Trust me, it’s not appealing.
But since we were in Brisbane, we had to try it.
Here’s our verdict:

Frankly, it was the low point of my visit to Sydney. Worst tasting stuff I’ve ever eaten. Made poi taste good… yep I said it … no like poi. But Vegemite is in a special class of awful. I was so fired up to try it. It sucked. Was all fired up to drink Fosters with the locals. They don’t drink it. Now I will say that having shrimp on the Barbi at Bilgola Beach was righteous. Sydney was an awesome place, need to go to Melbourne, Brisbane, Uluru, and Perth next time. And for sure, there will be NO VEGEMITE this time.
CAT & Delicate Blossom: So Vegemite is opposite of Dynamite!?
soooo. Bizarre Foods? I am not adventurous, so I’ll pass. Lol.
Hello Cat!
You guys crack me up! 😆
Ahahahahaha I didn’t make you….
lol. your reaction says it all! priceless. (and, i don’t think i’ll be trying vegemite any time soon! some things are just not on my bucket list! ;o))
Ugh, I had a friend send some my way before. I’ll NEVER try it again!
Yeah, it’s definitely not for everyone!
Like you said – it’s what we grow up eating in New Zealand and Australia… it really is an acquired taste.. and for the majority of people, if you don’t grow up with it, you’ll never train yourself to like it.
(You guys did put it on the toast a little too thick though… couldn’t tell if you already had butter on there.. but it’s best to spread a little on straight after the butter so that as the butter melts, the vegemite kind of.. spreads.)
Good on you both for trying it!!
Melissa – I noticed you mentioned that you’d tried Marmite – was that the New Zealand Marmite or the English Marmite? Believe it or not, they’re actually completely different products. Same name, very similar packaging.. but made out of different things.
If you found Vegemite too salty, try NZ Marmite – it’s slightly sweeter.
