Could not live there, too cold in the winter. But, it looks like a great place to visit in the spring and summer. The gelato sure looks great!

CAT: Since Amsterdam is so dog friendly, do people pick up after dogs or are they like Paris? I know the last time I was there, the streets and sides were relatively clean.

Although the art available for viewing in Amsterdam is superb, I’d regret it if I hadn’t made a side trip to the Hague to see Vermeer’s “View of Delft” in person on a work trip a few years ago. Amsterdam is such a vibrant city, and the Dutch countryside is somewhat unremarkable but for its canals, waterworks, and unique agriculture. If I could recommend two side trips from Amsterdam, they’d be to the Hague and to Bruges, Belgium.

Dusseldorf is about the closest city in Germany to Amsterdam, and I was mildly surprised to see men, women, and teenagers having tall glasses of beer with breakfast there at 10:30 am on a trip in June. As much as I might have liked to have some beer, I doubt my stomach would ever be ready that early in the morning.

Cat, do most locals understand and speak english?

  • Reply Eric August 26, 2013 at 5:46 pm

M, English is widely spoken in Amsterdam. In fact many of them speak it better than some of us native speakers 🙂

I never had any problem asking questions. I think that the Dutch cater to the English tourists thus the wide spread use of english.

Cat, love the fuud pics…keep em coming.

Cat, I don’t think you’ve mentioned it yet, but the Dutch have to be some of the tallest people in the world. Looks like the shortest natives i saw there were at least 5’9-10. Theatre seating has a lot of leg space.
