Ever drove around, wondering what to eat?

I tend to do that a lot.

The other day my husband and I were wandering around, in search of something but not quite sure what. We didn’t know if we wanted burgers or oxtail soup or unagi.

We started in Waikiki and couldn’t find parking. We headed toward Ward but didn’t crave anything there. Then, on a whim, I suggested Restaurant Epic, a Eurasian/Pacific Rim fusion restaurant that opened in early 2007.

I clearly remembered when it opened. I was still working at The Honolulu Advertiser and had walked past it on my way to (or from) lunch one day. I remember thinking, “Anyone who’d name his restaurant Epic has got balls.”

And that was it. I never tried it. Not all the years I had worked in downtown. Not even for lunch.

It just so happened I came across the restaurant in a listing on Happy Hour Hawaii, a handy app and website that lists the most up-to-date information about happy hours at restaurants and bars across Hawaii.

Epic’s happy hour menu offers a bunch of interesting small plates between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. Items like fried shrimp with Cajun remoulade ($7), cheese steak Gyoza ($5), short rib sliders ($7), poutine (gravy with fries, $5). Not to mention imported beers, wine, well drinks, and the house mojito and martini all for just $4.

I looked at my watch.

6 p.m.

Good. There was still half an hour left of happy hour.
