I had heard about this #ThaiHot Challenge on Twitter — and I knew I wasn’t going to participate.
The challenge was simple: contestants had to, in five minutes, eat as much as they could of Sabai Dee Thai Restaurant’s hottest dish on the menu. No water, no napkins and (for at least one contestant) no crying.
The challenge, organized by Cody Onizuka (@codyonizuna), lured a standing room only crowd at the little Thai restaurant on South King Street. It was broadcast live on Channel 808 and co-hosted by KITV’s Amber-Lynn Hyden.
Here’s what the event — and the food — looked like, in case you missed it:

I am surprised that you did not participate!
I’m not! I can’t handle that much heat!
Hehe. Love the video. Especially the fact that you can hear everyone going crazy in the background. ;D Fun night~! Can’t wait for round 2, you’re competing, right? hehehe
Me? No way. I’m a lightweight when it comes to super hot food! An ice cream challenge though…
You would be hard pressed in the ice cream eating challenge if you were to go up against @lisalisa98. She might be small and cute but I’ve seen her put away a Big City Diner’s The Big Sundae–by herself.
Hello Cat,
Fuud pics Friday!
I couldn’t do that. I’m not into spicy fuuds.
I tried it after — and my lips burned for hours!
I like to enjoy what I’m eating and not suffer from the pain of the spice. 🙂
I’m with you. I only like pain when I’m getting a massage. 🙂
It was a great, fun night! Great seeing old and new faces, and props to the 5 contestants. You’re far braver than I am. Big props to the two female contestants, and one of them was in lock step with @harrycovair the whole way. If she ate a few more peppers, history would’ve been different….
And that dessert is great, I agree! Especially after an unnamed writer, who owns two dogs, has her own blog, and teaches at KCC, generously “donated” it to me. I owe you for that, woman!
Who in the world are you talking about??? 😀
Excellent video. Liked the background voices and the facial expressions of the contestants. The woman at the end had almost no facial expression – no pleasure, no pain. The guy next to our winner was having fun the whole time.
Personally, I love medium-spicy foods (hot by most people’s standards), but the super hot stuff is just to painful for me to enjoy. Like getting a tattoo applied with the points of a sharpened dinner fork.
Lena (@tran_lena) was a trooper! She didn’t flinch!
Pound for pound, @tran_lena is a trooper. She’ll be back next year.
Don’t hold back! Be the first to sign up next year Cat. As you said, the pain is only temporary.
Realistically the Papaya Salad was HOTTER! than usual but the pain in the mouth subsided fast. My chin was numb from the Pepper-Oil sauce (dribbling down) for over an hour, even after my Ice Cream was gone.
My only thought was getting the Mango Ice Cream right after the contest was over. I ordered one for @jadedmuses and I saw Albert from @KoAlohauke eating one too. I’m not sure if @tran_lena and @ricknakama ordered Ice Cream also.
Eh, this the guy that was caught “sexting” Niu Valley middle school students! Shame!
