I’ve had my Kindle Fire for more than a year now, and while I use it pretty regularly, I can’t seem to stop buying books.
Why is that?
There’s something about the tangible book, I suppose, that the Kindle can’t replace. I can toss it on the bedside, I don’t have to charge it, I don’t care if I leave it unattended at the beach. And the Kindle takes up far less room than books — a plus if you’re like me and hate a cluttered house.
But the Kindle — and this applies to other e-readers — offers so much more than books can. I can look up definitions to words right on the spot. I can browse the web. And if I want to buy the second installment of “The Hunger Games,” I can do it right from the device — and start reading the next book in seconds.
Don’t get me wrong, I love my Kindle. It’s my nightly companion and beach must-have. But I also buy hard-copy books, too, stacking them on my bedside and on shelves around the house. I love flipping through the pages, the smell of a new book cracked open, the way it feels in my hands. I just can’t help it.
Anyone else having a book affair with their e-reader? I need advice!

I use Kindle on the PC and Droid but frankly don’t use either enough to justify a dedicated Kindle device. Having said that I don’t buy books at all anymore… there is no space to put them. Also, started using Amazon to buy movies to watch without getting the physical unit. In the end it is all about the clutter of having a lot of media lying around. Shameless plug… wrote and published a book for the Kindle last year. For a writer it is an excellent way to get a book done.
CAT: I guess it shows you are still “old school”.
Hey Cat … I’ve never been a book worm … so I won’t ever need an e-reader … anyway, I prefer reading words on paper … something about a brightly lit screen just tires my eyes …
… anyway, like Annodah Dave says … you’re a little old school …
… I like to thinker of it as being a “tweener” … we’re old enough to understand and still love and appreciate how things were done in the past … but young enough to be able to take advantage of the new technology available …
… and yes!!! … the smell of freshly printed pages!!! … I’m old school that way too …
… speaking of the smell of new pages … I remember one of my high school teachers would still make copies on that machine that prints in purple ink … I forget what it was called … a mimeograph??? … or something like that … I love the smell of that paper!!! …
@rayboyjr: Mimeograph used black or sometimes blue ink depending upon the color choice available. The purple ink one was known as “Ditto” machine and was alcohol based ink. No wonder you liked the smell…matter of fact, so did I. LOL
I think almost everyone liked the smell from freshly printed Ditto machines. 😆
I cheat on my Kindle with my iPad Kindle app, although less so now that I have the Kindle Paperwhite. Love a sharp and well- lit screen.
I have a Kindle Fire, but I mainly use it just for vacations (so I don’t have to pack half a suitcase with books, and I don’t have to take a laptop just to check my email)…. otherwise, I prefer an old fashioned book! (Of course, I was born in the mid 70’s, so I’ve not grown up in a solely digital world. It might be different if I were just a decade younger.)
Don’t think it as cheating think of it as an open relationship.
Maybe instead of buying books and cheating on your kindle, you could borrow books from the library. True you won’t get that “new book” smell and feel but you’ll have more money to spend on say… FOOD or adventures and you’ll still be able to read to your hearts content. And on the plus side you’ll be supporting your local library. 🙂 Just a thought.
At least your hard copy book won’t EVER find out you were actually attached in a relationship, but continue to think you’re single.
Whereas, your Kindle Fire is connected to the internet, so he’ll easily find out you were cheating on “him” through FB, as well as your own blog, right here. BUSTED!
At least the hard copy book is cheaper to date. No need for internet service charges.
