Introducing Cat Chat

By Catherine Toth Fox • November 12, 2010 • Musings, The Daily Dish

People have asked me, “Why don’t you do TV?”

And my answer is always the same: “I don’t own a hairbrush.”

That’s partly true — the other part being that I never felt I fit into the traditional TV mold. I don’t sit nicely, I don’t wear heels and — yes — I don’t want to brush my hair if I don’t have to. But I do see the value and allure of videos, especially in the ability to visually share a story or connect with readers, many of whom I’ve never met IRL. (That’s “In Real Life” for you non-geeks!)

So we came up with a concept that better fit my personality — and my distaste for mascara: a weekly online TV show on Nonstop Honolulu, with me dishing with a guest about everything from relationships to reality TV. From a couch, no footwear necessary.

Welcome to Cat Chat.

Our first episode features self-described local geek (and all-around nice guy) Ryan Ozawa (@hawaii) who, like me, is addicted to CBS’ “Hawaii Five-0.” So we met up to talk story about the show and about the upcoming reunion of the fictitious Kukui High School tomorrow night at Oceans 808 at Restaurant Row.

Check it out — and tell us what you think! We hope you enjoy it!

Awesome! This is a fun little video segment! We have some interesting peeps lined up to chat with Cat, so stay tuned and as always, we’d love your feedback!

Thanks to @Hawaii for being the first guest of Cat Chat, which we hope to produce weekly or at least very regularly.

  • Reply nathankam November 11, 2010 at 10:48 pm

Cat, what a great idea! This is really fun to watch and I’m looking forward to tuning in each week. And always good to see Hawaii’s resident geek Ryan sharing his mana‘o. *applause*

    • Reply Maxcat November 11, 2010 at 11:08 pm

@nathankam hahaha … when I glanced at this the first time I misread ‘man’o’ as mama Oprah and starting thinking Ryan and Oprah … been on the mainland too long

    • Reply Johngarcia November 11, 2010 at 11:52 pm

@nathankam Agree – Ryan is awesome! hehe don’t let his shy, nerdy demeanor fool you!

  • Reply Maxcat November 11, 2010 at 11:06 pm

I enjoyed watching this … good job by all concerned … looking forward to moe cat chats … and thinking that somewhere out there Turk Fontaine is salivating ….. sorry Turk, couldn’t resist

  • Reply WildeOscar November 11, 2010 at 11:07 pm

This is awesome; please keep doing it. One production tip: Cat and guest need to look more at the camera and less at each other. It is awkward, and we naturally make eye contact when we are having a conversation. With a single camera, though, the camera is ultimately the Cat Chat viewers, and the camera needs at least half the eye contact.

    • Reply Maxcat November 11, 2010 at 11:10 pm

@WildeOscar good point … yeah it makes you guys appear nervous if you don’t look at us and seem to make eye contact … that said it was still good fun and it is gonna be magnificent as you gain more experience with it … cool … and I wanna see the M & M girls — Melissa and Mari together

    • Reply Johngarcia November 11, 2010 at 11:51 pm

@Maxcat @WildeOscar Great feedback! We’ll be sure to keep that in mind! Cat — you reading this!? 🙂

    • Reply MaxMaxMax November 12, 2010 at 2:11 am

@Johngarcia @Maxcat @WildeOscar One more tip if you don’t mind, from an architect/designer. I would move the couch to the right so that the backdrop is all drapes. As it is now with the light-bleeding drapes and wall showing, it seems like a “home-made” set. I think that is all you need to do to bump it up to the next level. Love the couch and pillows, very warm and fuzzy! ;^D

Awesome Job Cat, Diane, John, and the rest of the nonstop crew! You all are reinventing the notion of web-based and online content. Much appreciated, and kudos to Ryan and Valentino for your Kukui High Stuffs… I need to get a shirt and a bumper sticker… HAHA

  • Reply Haken November 11, 2010 at 11:31 pm

Great first episode. Looking forward to the next. FWIW, I believe Ryan would be great on TV, the messy hair look is vogue these days.

    • Reply Hawaii November 11, 2010 at 11:49 pm

      @Haken Thanks, Peter!

  • Reply Surfingat50 November 12, 2010 at 2:13 am

Nice show. The downloading makes it a little choppy. You should be on tv like when you were on that morning show. Do one on surfing Waikiki. The fun of surfing the dawn patrol. Surfing at 50

    • Reply MaxMaxMax November 12, 2010 at 2:16 am

@Surfingat50 @Johngarcia I watched at full 720p and it was smooth as silk. No choppiness at all…

John G., I assuming you’re doing the production? Very nice job. Very professional looking!

    • Reply Johngarcia November 12, 2010 at 3:40 am

@MaxMaxMax @Surfingat50 Surfing — it’s defaulted to play in hd, which could be a problem if you’re on a slower connection. I’ll play with some compression settings and see how light I can get it. The final 1080p export from Final Cutto h.264 via elgato was about 370mb.

Max — got your e-mail this morning, mahalo! Yes, quick shoot, five minute take but since it was the first ep, I had to whip up some graphics, etc, so next ep will be quicker. Cat’s intro is simple but plan on something more dynamic and fun soon!

    • Reply Johngarcia November 12, 2010 at 3:37 am

@turkfontaine Coco puffs FTW! I like you more and more each day! ahaha

Ah, video content! Good show, looking forward to more. So when’s the M&M Eats video coming out? Is the band still together?

  • Reply DanSeto November 12, 2010 at 3:07 am

Ha! Great job. And here you’ve said in the past you couldn’t do such a show because you would have to watch your language. LOL!

    Go Nuts!

    • Reply Johngarcia November 12, 2010 at 3:36 am

@DanSeto No FCC regulations here! 🙂 Plus, we’ve got bleep sound fx if we need them. hehe

  • Reply chant808 November 12, 2010 at 3:32 am

Yay, go Cat! I forsee a tradition of eating my breakfast (and possibly choking on it laughing) while watching Cat Chat 🙂
Quality vid, comfortable, pro-looking set, great audio, no dl problems here. Only thing I’d suggest is changing the color on the lower 3rds… white on light blue doesn’t show up that well.

    • Reply Johngarcia November 12, 2010 at 3:35 am

@chant808 hehe great design thought, Tracy! While editing last night, it looked great on my 24″ monitor in full hd… on the web, not so much, but that’ll change! 🙂

    Great show!

Just wanted to say I love the show and the length was just right for watching a quick interview! Hopefully you might consider doing some on location spots. The name of the show is awesome. Maybe some day you could do a live spot and take questions over the Internet or Twitter. 🙂

  • Reply ron November 12, 2010 at 11:20 am

Great job Cat and Ryan. Keep up the quality and good work!

  • Reply islephoenix808 November 12, 2010 at 2:15 pm

Excellent video. I can tell you (and Ryan will attest) that I pretty much never watch anything online, but I’m glad I caught this one. Cat, still as awesome as I remember.

One suggestion (in the same line as the eye-contact notes previous), if it might be possible to have two cameras, each one facing a speaker more directly and which could be cut between, I think it would look a lot better and more feel comfortable.

I am certainly looking forward to the next Cat Chat. Good luck!

Great show Cat. Looking forward to the next one.

This format is great because frankly for those of us who haven’t met IRL we get a window into how the words look coming out of the horses… excuse me Cat’s mouth. And besides what local slang we see messed up on H50 we enjoy here… just watch the local potty mouth 🙂

Thanks for all of your feedback — and, most importantly, for actually watching! I’ve been having trouble logging in to comment, but hopefully it’s all fixed and I can be part of my own conversations! How novel!
