Old shows getting new life

By Catherine Toth Fox • July 19, 2011 • Musings, The Daily Dish

This may sound like an oxymoron, but there’s such a thing now as classics from the ’90s.

At least in terms of television.

Starting next Monday, TeenNick, part of the Nickelodeon family of cable channels for children (that I don’t subscribe to), will start rebroadcasting TV shows popular for kids from the ’90s.

Called “The ’90s Are All That,” this late-night time block will feature runs of shows like “All That” (shown), “Clarissa Explains It All” and ““Kenan & Kel.”

It’s like “Nick At Nite” but for the 18- to 34-year-old sect.

It’s obvious I missed the age cut. Because I don’t remember watching these shows. They don’t even sound vaguely familiar.

The channel got its initial list of shows from Facebook feedback — smart — and will continue to let the social media site influence what other shows rotate into the block. (Read more in this New York Times story.)

Too bad the age demo didn’t skew just a little bit older. Because I have my list of my favorite TV shows — not cartoons; that’s another blog — ready:

• “A-Team”
• “MacGyver”
• “Family Ties”
• “The Greatest American Hero”
• “My So-Called Life”
• “Happy Days”
• “Cheers”
• “Taxi”
• “The Jeffersons”
• “Magnun PI”

Got any to add?

    Nate, “WHA-chu TALKin bout?

    My faves:

    “Square Pegs”
“The New Adventures of Beans Baxter”
    “The Cosby Show”

Already in re-runs back then, but in 1966, my crisis was having to start kindergarden and not being able to watch “Bewitched” in the mornings anymore. I had such a 5-year-old crush on Elizabeth Montgomery (played both Samantha and her wild cousin and occasional character Serena). My family home just happened to have a reproduction of Rembrandt’s (or a contemporary apprentice of his) painting “Girl With a Broom,” just like the one on the wall in the Stevens’ house on the show. That framed reproduction painting is one of the few things that I kept from my childhood home; it reminds me of “Bewitched” to this day everytime I see it; and the original hangs in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, so it is quite unavailable for my exclusive enjoyment.

LOL, I love that it was a crisis! In Kindergarten!

Didn’t watch a lot of TV in the 90s but when I did I watched the following:

    1.) ER
    2.) Frasier
    3.) Fresh Prince
    4.) Home Improvement
    5.) Law and Order
6.) Star Trek – Next Generation
    7.) MASH reruns

As far as favorites go I’d add a few to the above list.

    1.) Six Feet Under
2.) Top Gear – the UK show
3.) Two and a Half Men – Charlie Sheen should still be on that show
    4.) Castle
    5.) Magnum PI
    6.) The Avengers
    7.) Benny Hill
    8.) Lost
    9.) House
    10.) Scrubs
    11.) Get Smart
    12.) All in the Family
    13.) The Jeffersons
14.) ABCs Wild World of Sports

And that’s all I got to say about that

Great list! Forgot about “ER,” “Home Improvement” and “Frasier.” I guess I should’ve included “Seinfeld” on my list, too!

Never was that into Seinfeld except for the Soup Nazi episode and the one where they lost the car in the parking deck… was thinking of Ala Moana the whole show

    Hi Cat:

Forget how old you are, but a bit younger than me I believe. So I’m surprise to see your list and realize I watched the same shows. Especially loved Taxi and Cheers. And funny that you also liked The Greatest American Hero. I loved that cheesy show too! Damn, I got the theme song running through my head now …

“…Believe it or not I’m walking on air. I never thought I could feel so free. Flying away on a wing and a prayer. Who could it be? Believe it or not it’s just me…”

Watched alot of shows like Hill Street Blues, LA Law, ER, Seinfeld. What decade was this? And Beavis and Butthead – hehehehe …

    And these too:

    The X-Files
    In Living Color
    The Practice
    Party of Five

    • Reply Catherine Toth July 20, 2011 at 11:42 am

Forgot about “The X-Files” and “Party of Five,” though I didn’t want the latter one nearly that much. The former, though, was a Sunday ritual.

one more thing…..so does this mean moronic reality tv has run its course? The bad economy is bringing back folks to the small screen for entertainment(although…most people have their own giant screens now,but you know what i mean)? AND, what.,….no more originality? the dumbing of America is all about remakes? Frankly,i’ll take the originals. Couldnt Hawaii 5-0 just have been a brand new Hawaii tv cop show? why a remake? Name recognition perhaps. All valid questions…..stay tuned…..

All the shows I used to watch when I came home from school. Latchkey kid classics!

  • Reply Mariko July 20, 2011 at 10:01 pm

    Well, those were Nickelodeon shows….
(I adored All That. I didn’t have cable but when I could, I’d be glued to the screen for that show.)
    Oh, I liked Blossom too.

I think my, uh, tastes have refined a bit over the years. Luckily.

Definitely Star Trek the Next Generation! And X-files! Yeah. I’d watch that if they brought it back.
