Confession: Aside from NPR and sports talk shows, I don’t listen to the radio much anymore.
So it was no surprise when I heard this morning — on NPR, of course — the picks for best songs of 2012 I didn’t know 90 percent of them. (Here’s the entire list, in alphabetical order.)
I mean, who’s Ana Tijoux, the Egyptian Project, and Kelan Philip Cohran and the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble?
All three made the list — and with names I actually do recognize like Usher, Andre 3000 and — get this! — Sinead O’Connor. Nice to see she’s still rocking the charts!
But the one song that I hadtohadtohadto agree on one song on the list: fun.’s “We Are Young.”
Here’s the video
Here’s how NPR described the song: “The most shout-along-able hit single of 2012 is more than what it seems on the surface. It’s the chronicle of a bar brawl; it’s the midnight plea of an unreliable narrator; it’s the Glee generation’s slide into maturity; it’s an emo barn-burner that tells the ugly truth about male vulnerability for once. If you didn’t notice all that, who cares? You still got to sing your guts out.
Yeah, that.
NPR’s Ann Powers had her own take on the best songs of 2012, gleaned from the pop charts. (Here’s her list.)
It’s full of the usual suspects — and songs I know! — like “Somebody That I Used To Know,” “Call Me Maybe” and, her pick, “What Makes You Beautiful” by the English-Irish boy band sensation One Direction.

Got any to add to this list?

I am a big fan of somebody I used to know and what makes you beautiful. call me maybe was pretty good as well. The big bang theory video with it was fun. Overall a pretty good year in music. I suspect used to know will be around on the radio the longest of them all.
Ann Powers said the same thing, that this year was the feel-good year in songs. I have to agree. Still, I didn’t know half the songs on that list, either!
True every year really, I hear them once and if they don’t move me I forget them. Used to Know was excellent gave me shivers. I played the list and had heard them before just didn’t register.
Hey Cat … Gangnam Style is not on either list??? … no way!!! … haha …
… who made that NPR list??? … I recognize only a handful … but probably would remember more if I heard them played … but either way … I feel so out of touch with music these days …
… I don’t remember the last time I actually paid for music … just download … and I have all these music files … that I may or may not remember the name of or artist …
… yeah, you can bash me … I should be supporting the music industry by paying for something … I still love music …
