Day 1: Kauai on the fly

By Catherine Toth Fox • July 29, 2011 • #CatTravels

I have a love-hate relationship with traveling.

On the one hand, I love experiencing new places, eating at new restaurants and meeting new people.

But on the other hand, I like my own bed, my own bathroom — and control over my own schedule.

You don’t get those three on business trips — which is the reason I’m on Kauai this week.

Of course, that’s only true depending on the people you travel with — and I scored on this trip.

The folks I’m with love to eat, love to laugh and — did I mention? — love to eat. So we were all on the same page.

And honestly, there’s no better place to do those things than on Kauai, where you can eat locally sourced food and see the most stunning sights in the world — all within a one-mile radius.

Here’s what our first day on the Garden Isle looked like:

First stop: coffee. So we headed to the charming town of Hanalei on Kauai's north shore and directly to Java Kai, a coffee shop opened by Jennifer and Brent Hickman in 1997.

I can’t believe I haven’t been to Kauai in 15 years (aside from one-day business trips which don’t count)! Think I’m overdue for a visit!

Yes, you are! I haven’t been to Kauai in years — until this year, when I went twice!

Geez! I haven’t been to Kauai in years! Thanks for bringing back memories…I need to go back real soon.

Yes, you do. People say there’s not a lot to do on Kauai — and that’s true when you compare the island to, say, Oahu. But there’s plenty if you look.

“But on the other hand, I like my own bed, my own bathroom — and control over my own schedule.” Therefore you should live on a Lagoon 62 catamaran so you can see the world and take all of your stuff with you. Yeah I know, a Privilege 745, Yapluka 62, or perhaps a Valiant 50 would be just fine but you get the idea. Ask anyone in the cruising community, they have a righteously fun life.

      I can’t be on a catamaran that long. I get seasick… 🙁

Ugh! Shame really, it is a wonderful way to travel.

    Hello Cat,
    Business trip? on eating?
The best part I like about traveling is eating, seeing new places, eating, meeting new people and eating, in that order.

      LOL! Exactly!

If I had to pick a favorite picture from among the 23, it would have to be numer 18, crystal clear water. Outstanding pictures as always. Having a good subject, and Kauai is a pretty good subject, is only the start. Thank you for sharing edibles and scenery through Cat’s eyes.

Kauai makes it easy to take nice photos! 🙂
