Hey, ‘TODAY’ producers! Don’t miss this!

By Catherine Toth Fox • May 17, 2013 • #CatTravels

Today

Well, word’s out.

Matt Lauer, Savannah Guthrie and the rest of NBC’s “TODAY” crew will be in town next week, as part of the morning show’s “Great American Adventure.”

In fact, show staffers have been in the Islands for the past few days, shooting b-roll and figuring out just what the anchors and correspondents of the national show will do.

Screen Shot 2013-05-17 at 11.15.35 AMHawaii is the first destination of the five U.S. destinations for the show’s “Great American Adventure” — it will be shot on the beach fronting the luxurious Royal Hawaiian Hotel — and I’m super excited. I’ve a huge fan of the “TODAY” show since the Bryant Gumbel era. Tolerated Katie Couric, loved Meredith Vieira and now completely infatuated with Hoda Kotb.

But when any national show comes to town, I get a little… well, worried. Born and raised here, I feel very strongly these shows need to get it right. I want them to highlight what we are — not necessarily what we’re known for. (There’s a subtle difference.) While you can’t get away from things like Diamond Head and the Arizona Memorial, Hawaii has more to offer than the typical tourist spots.

So let’s put together a list of what you think producers — and the anchors — should experience while in town that will be truly authentic.

Go!

LOL… get them to park their car somewhere on the North Shore, or Waimanalo, or Waianae and leave some valuables on the seat. Whoops already happened to a film crew. But seriously Cat, you should call and offer to teach Savannah how to surf… how much more local can you get???

Hula is not just some random, made up dance. it is a part of Native Hawaiian culture that has existed for longer than all of us. Please don’t put on some fakey, cheap grass skirt, sway your hips around a bit, and say you’re doing the Hula. Not only are you making an ass out of yourself, you’re insulting the many who love, respect, and practice the dance.

I agree with portraying Hawaii how they use to living in grass shacks! I did post on a comment of facebook later that morning I watched all of it. I even stayed up at 1am to watch. Anything show casing Hawaii I am all about it. And don’t want to get mad with what they say about us. Born and raised also like most of us take pride in our islands and people. I think they did pretty good. I would have want them to talk more about the Hawaiians, the history, the culture. Before it came the modern Hawaii the “old days” if you will. Go back to what Waikiki was before on the hotels came and got built. It was full of taro and water where they grow there food. But overall they did pretty good covering it well not to much time to talk on tv. They cut the braddah talking about pounding poi short.
