Three years ago okazu lovers in central and east Honolulu got a nice surprise: the beloved Gulick Delicatessen in Kalihi opened a second location on South King Street, where the old King’s Bakery used to be.
And when it opened, it was an immediate hit, with folks lining up to get the nishime, shrimp tempura and corned beef hash patties they knew and loved.
Founded by the Takara family more than 30 years ago, this location is run by sons Cory Makishi and Lee Takara, who, along with Lee’s wife Denise, operate Kochi Restaurant & Lounge next door.
It’s a must-stop for anyone craving okazu-ya — which is me almost every Saturday.
Here’s what I ate on a recent trip to Gulick Deli:

Oh that’s just before the McCully St. intersection…I gotta try it one of these mornings/lunches while in town for work. Gotta see what their veggie tempura and garlic chicken taste like, looks good.
The food at Kochi is super ono too!
The tuna roll with dikon in the middle is my favorite.
The only thing wrong about going to Gulick or any other deli or lunch shop? Not knowing when to stop choosing. 🙂 I once walked out with a $10 plate (not box) from Hilo Lunch Shop. Well ate 1/2 for breakfast so actually was $5 lunch. That’s my story and I’m sticking with that. :^P
cannot stop thinking abt the veggie tempura, which i’ve never had. it’s interrupting my thots.
Pics look so good. Agree with others veggie tempuralooks like a showstopper, workstopper.
Hello Cat!
Back to back fuud pixs!
They have ono fuud and Kochi’s is ono too!
CAT: Aaaiiiyyyaaahhh! FUUD PIX! Tenks! Gulick is like an old delicatessen with updated menu items. I forget whether they still have kimpira with ebi.
My two faves: The Vegetable Tempura (which as you pointed out has Kamaboki and Parsley) and the Konbu Maki. The spooky part is that I’m walking out with at $15 plate lunch sometimes.
Thanks for the fuud prom Cat. Aww geez, now I’m craving for a Veggie Tempura but I’m not going to be back in Hawaii till next week.
