I’ve always thought of smoked meat as dry and, well, smokey.
Until I tried the offerings from Guava Smoked, a specialty smoked meat producer based in Kapahulu run by Scott Shibuya, a former high school graphic arts teacher who decided to turn his hobby into a career.
He uses only guava wood to smoke his meat, giving it a slightly different flavor than kiawe or other woods. (And these trees are invasive, so it’s eco-friendly. Plus!)
Shibuya will be one of several vendors at the Moiliili Summer Fest on July 6 at the old Varsity Theatre parking lot.
Here’s more about Shibuya and his smoked meats:
Moiliili Summer Fest, 5-10:30 p.m. Saturday, July 6, 1100 University Ave.

CAT: Big Mahalos to Scott for helping to get rid of invasive guava and making guud fuud. If you didn’t know, once the guava bush takes hold, nothing, absolutely nothing can grow around it…even weeds!
I had NO IDEA! Interesting. Glad he’s contributing to the environment while making delicious grub!
… unfortunately, the guava propagates so fast … that I’m not sure how much of a dent he can put in stopping the plant spreading …
Hey Cat: I can tell it’s really good just by your reaction … and the description and what I see from the video makes me imagine something so delicious … damn, wish I had some now …
