Found: Butter logs from Larry’s Bakery

A few years ago, I heard Larry’s Bakery — the one that used to be in Waiau and known for its wholesale business — had opened a storefront somewhere in Salt Lake.

But the other day, on my way to Target, I drove past it — and came to an immediate halt.

There it was. Larry’s Bakery. I needed to stop.

The bakery opened back in the 1960s by Larry — of course — Yafuso. After he passed away, his children, Iris and Lance, took over the bakery — and have taken it to the next level, with a website and social media reach.

What Larry’s is known for is simple: delicious nostalgic desserts that were on the menu when it first opened decades ago. Things like jelly rolls and loaf cakes — and the aforementioned Butter Log ($5), a buttery roll of sponge cake and sugar that, when combined, is the most delicious thing you could ever put in your mouth.

At least that what I thought when I had my first bite today.

And it’s only five bucks!

But that’s not all.

We sampled (from left) Larry’s glazed donut, apple turnover and lima bean manju — all simple and tasty and reminiscent of the baked goods you’d get in old-fashioned bakeries.

Which, apparently, is the point.

So if you haven’t been to Larry’s, I highly recommended you do. It’s open tomorrow — though only until noon — and the butter logs do sell out. So get there early!

Larry’s Bakery, 4369 Lawehana St., Hours: 6 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday through Friday, 6 a.m.-noon Saturday, closed Sunday. Phone: (808) 422-0059.

Hmm, only a five-minute drive from home. Guess I should check this place out. Then go to Target to buy pants with a bigger waistline.

Family’s favorite is the fudge cake! If you haven’t tried it, you should!

Good to know! Someone just posted on Twitter that I should try Larry’s Chantilly. I’m making a list!

Their white Chantilly cake rivals @lilihabakery’s…but i still love @lilihabakery’s more. But, definitely worth trying! =) great prices for their items!

Man the list of things to do when I get there is growing, got to wait until May unfortunately!

What happened? Thought you were coming earlier?

      • Reply David Jackson February 8, 2013 at 4:15 pm

Got a cheap rate on the flight but when I went to book a hotel room everyone was sold out except for a couple of places. The cheapest room was $289 per night. Everyone had good rates for May which was the next window for me. I’m bummed. But hey, so busy May will be here in no time.

Where’s the coffee to go along with the ono pasteries….

    • Reply Catherine Toth February 8, 2013 at 8:40 am

I actually don’t drink coffee, believe it or not. I mean, I CAN drink coffee (iced and sweetened, preferably), but I tend to stick to Diet Coke. 🙂

Hey Cat. I went to Larry’s and Target yesterday too. I saw you and your family walking into Target. My favorites at Larry’s are all the manju, apple turnovers, and pretzel doughnuts. So yummy. And I like their spam musubi too.

SPOTTED! I was wearing my pajamas, too! Pretzel donuts — I don’t think I saw those there. Next time!
