Cat Chat episode 9: No lie, Lanai

By Catherine Toth Fox • January 5, 2011 • Musings, The Daily Dish, Videos

Most of you know Grant “Lanai” Tabura as a stand-up comic and deejay.

Some of you may remember him as part of the Hoku-nominated comedy trio “The 3 Local Boys.” (Shows your age!)

But Tabura is much more than that.

He’s an avid stand-up paddle surfer, he’s a cigar aficionado — and he’s a savvy entrepreneur.

For the past few years, Tabura has been making his own wine — called Look Me in the Eye — and has recently developed a new smart phone app, Pidgin 101, which lists and defines more than 125 different commonly used words and phrases.

The wine is sold in grocery stores and wine shops in Hawaii and California. And his phone app — available now for iPhones and iPads but soon on Droids — is being downloaded daily without any advertising.

Yes, and he’s still a funny guy.

Find out how he got into wine-making, what the name means, and what he had originally wanted to call his wine.

Got someone you want me to interview? Post your suggestions here. We love hearing from you!

nice one. Thanks eh Gotta go look for it in Foodland. Ask Lanai to put you on his label too.

Ditto. Cat should give Lanai her head shot.
She can be the 2010 vintage (Year of the TIger). Eh.

I can attest for the greatness of both of the wines, I went with Lanai to Santa Ynez for the blending of this years vintages. We drank a lot of wines trying to come up with the perfect blends. You have really gotta try them as well as al the other Kaena Wines.

Great Job Cat keeping my bestie in line, he can be a bit lolo sometimes.

Whose kitchen is that? Very nice. Notice that you didn’t pound the wine down this time like last time. How about interviewing Chef Mavro and letting him cook something up in that kitchen. Used to love that Waikiki thing he did.

Great interview Cat. You’re really getting the hang of it.
Glad to see that Lanai has released his wine label into the market.
    Gotta try them

Another solid episode. Very fun. Lite and breezy, depsite the subject matter. Again, I can drink wine for the next 100 years and still won’t care for it. I think it’s genetic. Putting hot chicks on the label is a nice idea. That I can appreciate for the next 100 years.

A great, comfortable interview. I learned something about Lanai’s wine. Yes Cat, you definitely should be on one of the bottles. And, you’re getting the hang of wine (not whine).

The interview kinda reminds me of Rap Replinger and Aunty Marialani’s Cooking Show. Not too sweet, not too rancid, but just right….
