Last month I was craving meatloaf and a nice glass of wine.
That could only mean one thing: I was going to Roy’s Restaurant in Hawaii Kai.
But I’ll be honest: except for the meatloaf, I’ve been a bit underwhelmed on my last few visits there.
But this time, there was something different. The food was vibrant. The menu seemed reinvigorated. So we asked our server if there was a change in the kitchen.
Sure enough, there was a new executive chef, Chris Garnier. He’s not new to the company — he was busing tables there about 15 years ago — but he was new to the role. And at least to me, it seemed like the restaurant was back to its previous grandeur.
Here’s what we ate:

When I read “MEAT LOAF” I pictured you going to Roy’s for a meal of fancy squished up hamburger baked in a loaf pan smothered with gravy over mashed potatoes.
Ooh I like this kind loaf. Real MEAT stacked. nom nom I NEED MEAT NOW! Enough of cold cuts sandwiches.
Roy’s is always a stand by, and a favorite for out of town guests.
I always have the fish (can’t remember which one) with the macadamia-butter sauce! The desserts are always a hit too!
I’ve actually dined at the Austin TX Roy’s also, LOL! Talk about branching out with your franchise… a Hawaiian Fusion Cuisine restaurant in the heart of Texas!
Cat, have you ever been to Ninikuya on Waialae? Your crab cakes shot made me think of them. Their crab cakes are great (as well as the garlic bread which is served like an entree, and the steaks)!
I now understand why you order the meatloaf dish, it look so awesome indeed. I plan to visit Roy in San Francisco for dinner soon and decor is island theme in there. The menu also different depending on the exec. chef that run it there.
do they have the happy hour bar menu there? the one in SF has a happy hour bar menu which features some guud choices from the appetizer menu for a small price. my wife and I can get full on about thirty bucks for six or seven sample choices (kobe sliders, etc).
my favorite chocolate souffle! sooooo good! i don’t remember what entree i ate the last time i went to roy’s but i will always remember what i had for desert! that meatloaf looks delicious! now i want “good” meatloaf and mashed potatoes, too… mmm…. 🙂
@snow i forget where i saw this, but it works. to step your meatloaf up a few notches, put the mix in a loaf pan to form its shape, but then turn it out onto a cookie sheet and take the loaf pan off. this way you get five of the six sides that get glazed and crispy instead of just the top.
@matti2d @snow thanks for the tip! i’ve never actually made a meatloaf! but, since my oven doesn’t work (it’s really old and broken!) maybe i need to get someone to take me to roy’s! ;O)
Hello Cat!
Fuud pix Friday!
Can’t go wrong at Roy’s! Everything is guud!
Have a great weekend!
That beurre blanc just makes it I think…
I have the recipe for the souffle, but I’ve never quite gotten it right. Doesn’t stop me from trying!
i hope Rainbow DI is not worried about losing you uptown. i know better.
chocolate souffle with molten center=yummers!
Try it!! It never disappoints!
At least I didn’t post a photo of the singer Meatloaf. Talk about disappointment!
Time and place!
