It was a, well, challenging week.
So my boyfriend needed some comfort food, like, STAT.
So we headed to Asahi Grill, a little restaurant on Ward Avenue popular for its oxtail soup. Which was exactly what we had in mind.
The oxtail soup here is the same one from Kapiolani Coffee Shop, which used to be located in Kam Bowl (now a Walgreens) and in Kapalama City Square. Folks who crave this version — arguable the best on the island — now flock to Ward Avenue to feast on this classic island dish.
Here’s what our Saturday food fest looked like:
Pancakes up close
The pancakes aren't thick and fluffy, but they've got a great buttery flavor and chunks of banana. But it's the chantilly sauce — it's more like a glaze — that's drizzled over it that really made this dish. It's not on the menu — though it should be — so ask for it! You won't regret it!

Actually, I’ve been there when it’s not packed! off-peak hours are pretty empty. It’s nice and peaceful and we can spread out all our computer equipment!

Aaaiiiyyyaaahhh! Fuud Pix! Tenks! I enjoy the cholesterol bursting soup with the peanuts and parsley! One of the successor restaurants was at City Square. The bowl of OTS was almost $12!!!! I think it is much less at Asahi, if I remember correctly. I can see why the one at City Square closed. You can have 2 Blazin Steak plates for the cost of the OTS!! I think paying that much for the side of the beef is more sensible than the butt!!??
Good place to bring young children. The staff is generally helpful and understanding, happy to bring extra bowls and spoons and things. Napkins, especially. When kids eat oxtail, there is a splash zone.
The garlic chicken is the winner for me, not into the oxtail soup so much. Will have to check this place out when I come home for a visit.
I’m partial to the Spicy Ahi Don myself (without the optional Bay Shrimp). Small cubed Ahi tossed with a mild hot sauce, some slices of Avocado, a slice of Tamago, a squirt of some kind of dressing over the top, all over a bowl of hot rice. What more is there to like?

You gotta love the fatty meat in the oxtail soup. Their fried rice is one of the better ones around town and their Japanese menu is reasonably prices. Great review Cat!
