The question I get asked all the time is this: “Do you really eat all that food?”
Yes, I do. I may not eat all of it, but I do sample most of the stuff I post on social media.
To which is always this follow-up question: “So where do you put it all?”
The food goes in my stomach, as with everyone else. I surf, run, hike, swim and find any way to burn off whatever I consume. But I don’t have some magical metabolism or tapeworm — though I’ve often wished for both.
And get this: I juice. But the last time I posted a photo of that — on Instagram, maybe — I got booed.
Here’s the thing: we are not who we project to be on social media. At least we’re not ENTIRELY that person. Yes, I eat a lot of donuts and hike with my dogs. But I also work — some people don’t believe that — and spend a lot of time at home, reading a book or cooking pasta. I just don’t post all of that on social media.
A lot of people have harnessed the power of social media to create altered version of themselves online. These are often cooler versions, too. They’re foodies or wine connoisseurs or fashionistas or social media experts or — this always kills me — successful writers. I see people ask them questions about their supposed fields of expertise and wonder who’s telling the truth anymore.
It’s easy to create a personal brand on social media. I’ve done that. I bill myself as someone who lives, plays and eats in Hawaii, who writes for a living and who, on most mornings, hits the surf. These things are all true. But I don’t necessarily share the other things going in my life. I rarely post links to stories I’ve written or discuss the current books — yes, plural — I’m reading. Not that I’m embarrassed or strategically leaving that out. I just don’t think it’s relevant. And honestly, I don’t think people care all that much about the mundane things we do.
It’s interesting. I’ve always thought you create a personal brand by the work you do, not the work you profess to do on social media. But I guess times have changed.
I’m going to juice now.

What brand of juicer do you use and what is your favorite combination. Bought a juicer years ago but it’s still in the box.
I’m not really a monkey.
@travelmonkey I remember one time you posted a picture of a mug with your name on it on IG, and I was thoroughly confused for a good 10 seconds. I was thinking, “Why does @travelmonkey have a mug with the name “Name” on it?” See, I can’t even remember what your real name! LOL!
HAHA! i answer to my name, “monkey” or “hey you!”
priceless!
by juice you mean take some sort of Balco/biogenesis substance that converts your fatty intake to lean muscle mass, right? good call on not mentioning it on social media. look what happened to A-Roid.
Your status update makes more sense to me now but I still think we ARE (or should be) our social media personas but doesn’t necessarily mean that is all we are. What you post selectively skews others’ pov on your total package but that happens no matter what. People will judge you based on their interactions with you, no one sees every component of each others’ lives. I’m against building your social media profile to be someone you’re not but hopeful that whomever does that is a small slice of the people out there.
i like how you “outed” yourself. some of my friends and relatives are surprised and taken aback when they find out i’m also a juicer and 95% vegetarian. i don’t openly disclose it, but i don’t try to hide it either. it’s just very personal. they expect me to be a plate lunch eating, bacon-loving local boy, which i will always be in spirit, but i’m a healthier version of that stereotype. good for you girl, i like you even more now!
Everyone knows a different you than everyone else… it makes life fun and interesting. And besides… most of us have enough trouble figuring ourselves out so why not leave somethings to the imagination. If I ever figure me out I’ll worry a little about you.
Think I will smoothie now.
This is like the time I found out that professional wrestling is fixed. Not really. Blog on!
OK, you can eat all the food you want when you’re young. I had Bariatric surgery after following my mother’s words “Eat all your food before leaving the dining table because the people in China are starving”. Right! I should have packed a box and sent it to China instead of eating all that food! I’ve suffered a lot and do have a juicer- Jack LaLaane! It’s sitting in my kitchen idle since I can only eat 8-10 ounces of food at one sitting. Eat now and suffer later!!!!!!
I would be interested in links to whatever else you are writing and publishing! Also, I can’t believe you have been booed for juicing- what am I missing? Would also welcome recommendations on good books from what you are reading.
I have always thought that you should have ads on your blog- it’s an awful lot of work to be doing for free, and you have consistently blogged for quite a while. Ads don’t have to be totally intrusive and a turn-off to your readers. I think faithful readers would be happy that you are able to make a bit of money from your efforts which have so entertained us.
And…um…we haven’t heard anything about Derek for quite a while…
Only commenting since your “status” was noted in a reply above…made me wonder…
I too was wondering: I noticed no ring, and a subtle change in Cat’s writing style, so I began to worry.
Hello Cat!
Just continue what you doing, eat, surf, hike, run, eat, surf, hike, run, hike, eat and juice….
Hey Cat: the juicing works nicely for you … because of the summer heat, I’ve recently been “coking” … haha, 5 added pounds later I think I need to stop …
… I don’t think I have a personal brand … and if I did, my personal brand would not be defined by my work … rather, everything I do outside of work …
… sadly, it seems we are all actors at work … we transform into our work persona’s every work day …
I don’t juice, I make smoothies with my Vitamix.
As a blogger myself, I now have a complex, thanks to this article. Thanks Cat. I’ll try juicing. It may rid my complex.
I’m confused because I googled “I juice” and got an exercise regimen of “I Just Use Intense Controlled Exercise” https://www.ijuice.org/ and something about drinking vegetable juices https://www.100daysofrealfood.com/2013/06/20/why-i-dont-juice/
I don’t understand what you mean.
