I had never been to the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport before — but I had heard a lot of great things about it.
People I knew who had layovers here raved about the shopping and dining.
But I was most impressed by the technology considerations not often found at airports, let alone one of the world’s busiest.
First off, there’s free WiFi in places like food courts and gates. And just about everywhere there are convenient charging stations for folks to plug in their laptops and cell phones.
I love it.
It makes staying at the airport longer, thanks for stricter TSA regulations and security concerns, that much more manageable. I can actually be productive!
I hope other airports — like the Honolulu International Airport, which charges for Internet access — take notes. The ATL has it figured out.

I was at the Columbus, OH, (yes “International”) airport yesterday, and I was surprised and impressed by the charging stations in the gate seating area. They’d installed plug-ins in convenient spots under just about every seat (old seats, new plug-ins), and under new tables separating groups of seats.
Free WiFi I have yet to experience myself in an airport, but I’m sure it’s coming. I was a bit disappointed to find in Nashville a Starbucks shop with the seating arrangement of a regular full-service, free-standing shop (not just the usual airport take-away counter), but no AT&T/free WiFi. I guess many of the airports have exclusive deals with pay-providers like Boingo, and individual shops and airlines aren’t allowed to offer free WiFi. Not yet. Glad Atlanta has made it happen.
This is fairly new to ATL and a step in the right direction. Used to be you’d sit and watch CNN which after 30 minutes repeated. six hour delays were HORRIBLE and frequent. Think that airports are finally getting a clue.
Hello Cat,
I’m hoping you can get Wifi in Costa Rica.
