Mark your calendars.
On June 7 one of my favorite bakeries is giving away free donuts.
Yes, free donuts.
Regal Bakery will be shelling out free cake donuts at its newest location at 100 N. Beretania St. on Friday in celebration of The Salvation Army’s National Donut Day. (One per person, though.) A percentage of sales that day will be donated to The Salvation Army, as well.
Here’s the backstory: National Donut Day started in Chicago in 1938 to help raise money during the Great Depression and commemorate the “Donut Lassies,” those who fed donuts to American soldiers during World War I and catapulted the baked good into American mainstream. Today, National Donut Day raises funds and awareness to the social service programs offered by The Salvation Army.
Last year 30 million Americans received assistance from The Salvation Army’s 3,600 officers, 64,000 employees and 3.4 million volunteers.
So you’re not just indulging in a free treat — you’re helping a great cause.

I expect that most of those enjoying a free donut June 7th, and who enjoy the blessing to live life well-fed as I do, will make a voluntary donation or a purchase. I hope so.
The Salvation Army is one of our finest institutions in service to others. The religious message that was more prominent in decades past has taken a step back, but the service is still as strong as ever for those in need. We have a great spirit and history of volunteerism and charitable contribution in this country. In many places, there is no private non-profit service sector; if people are in need, and government doesn’t do it, it doesn’t get done.
As with and human institution, there are flaws and a few who do wrong, but the Salvation Army has a history we should all be proud and supportive of.
Salvation Army is good. Helped a lot of folks over the years.
