#CatTravels: Quick jaunt to Hilo

Wednesday — 12/12/12 — was a momentous day.

This date won’t happen for another century.

So why not get married?

That’s what my cousin did in Hilo — and our family jumped on a plane and spent 48 hours there.

I’ve always loved Hilo, back when I was majoring in geology and going on weekend field trips to the volcano. I loved the overcast skies, the rain — and the better-than-you’d-think food you can find everywhere.

So whenever I get a chance, I go back — with my list of the usual places to visit. Two Ladies Kitchen for mochi? Check. Low International Food for Rainbow Bread? Check. KTA Superstores — just because? Check.

So here’s what our family did — in between going to a wedding — while in Hilo:

I've been coming to Hilo for most of my life — and despite the gloomy weather and persistent rain — I've always loved this sleepy little town on the Big Island.

Hey Cat … love Hilo!!! … if ever I want a quick getaway … Hilo’s the spot … sadly, I haven’t been there in years … but good thing is, it mostly looks and feels the same as ever …

… and candy cigarettes!!! … oh the nostalgia … loved to puff on those … and it wasn’t a bad influence on me …

love Hilo. I’m the only one I know who does, though (I’d move there if there were jobs). even my cousins from Kauai think it’s a bit on the slow side, though.

    Good Morning!

Glad you could make it out this way. Yes, Naniloa has seen better days. If my friends come into Hilo & want to stay in any hotel, the recommendation is the Hilo Hawaiian.
Tips for your next venture to this town:
Miyo’s closed it’s Waiakea Villas location & moved close to Big Island Candies on Hinano.
Hawaiian Style Cafe is also soon to open its doors at the same complex
For omiyage, try checking out Big Island Delights on Kanoelehua–family run, really nice people
If you & Derek want to have a romantic getaway, try booking the “honeymoon suite” at Kilauea Lodge. Been there several times with the missus. In Volcano village, great B&B.
Sorry if I sound like a travelog, but always strive to help out a friend, eh?

CAT: Aaaiiiyyyaaahhh! Fuud Pix! Tenks! I guess you might say that the jaunt to Hilo was “sum guud”! Say, those weren’t “candy cigarettes” the boxes all said “bubble gum”. Candy cigarettes are were different and sucked on them…they had the same recipe as those small valentine heart candy.
