Word spread quickly about the newest buffet to open in Waikiki.
Mostly because it’s from Japan. Hokkaido, specifically. And it has a reputation for serving stellar food, especially for a buffet.
Here’s the story: Back in 2003, the first Five Star International Buffet opened in Hokkaido. The idea was to serve dishes with a global influence, so naturally it would work in Hawaii.
This location is the chain’s first outside Japan. And from the looks of it — it was packed the entire time we were there — it’ll likely do well.
You have to remember, though: it’s a buffet. Don’t come expecting James Beard award-winning cuisine. But you won’t leave hungry, that’s for sure.
Here’s what our lunch looked like:

Buffet eh? That looks so good after an hour of eating they might have to ask me to leave. That stew would likely be my favorite dish. And the desserts look pretty good too.
Oh, the desserts are stellar! I’m still craving the chocolate cream pie thing!
was there nigiri sushi? I went when they first opened and they had it and the price was only $16. Friends who went since were disappointed. just curious.
Yeah, it’s gotten mixed reviews. But I was totally satisfied. 🙂
Yummy!
love five star! it has changed a little since it first opened, but it’s pretty decent. esp for the price. you have to go back and try the steak salad. i eat at least one whole plate of just that. my older son loves it too. he has multiple servings of the yakisoba. he asks to go every weekend. full tummies all around!
I gotta say, it wasn’t as bad the reviews I’ve read online. I wanna try dinner now!
CAT: Aaaiiiyyyaaahhh! Fuud Pix! Tenks! it looks like it might worth the hectic trip into Waikiki.
