Another iPhone? Already?

By Catherine Toth Fox • October 4, 2011 • Musings, The Daily Dish

Let the speculation begin.

Starting at 7 a.m. HST, Apple will host a press conference titled, specifically, “Let’s Talk iPhone.”

Hmm. I wonder what the mega-million-dollar Cupertino, Calif.-based company is going to unveil. A new iPhone, perhaps?

It’s no surprise to Apple fans and tech-heads, many who were disappointed the company didn’t announce anything about the latest version of its smartphone at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in June. The iPhone 5 is due, maybe overdue, and just in time for Christmas, too.

Apple might be a computer company, but it sure seems like a marketing think tank instead.

According to Forbes, AT&T and Apple both blacked out vacation times for their employees in the beginning of October, only furthering speculation about the release of the new iPhone.

Not that we need a new one already. I feel like I just got used to the iPhone 4 — love the improved camera, by the way, but hate the useless flash — and now I’m left to covet a phone I can’t get unless I break my two-year contract with AT&T.

But will this phone be any better? Will it have near-field communication or 4G LTE technology? Will it have a bigger screen and a better, 8-megapixel camera? Will Sprint customers finally be able to download Instagram?

We’ll find out in a few hours.

The real question, though, remains: will I buy one?

We’ll have to wait and see.

Find out what Mashable readers say they want to see in the new iPhone. And check out Engadget’s live blog for blow-by-blow coverage from Cupertino.

In the good old days had to have the latest and greatest, still no iPhone, iPad, iPod etc. Maybe an iPhone 10? iPad 5? Maybe laptops will soon be able to make phone calls on cellular networks and that is how I will go. Gives me an excuse not to answer the phone 🙂 All the new technology is interesting just seems like the cycle times are two quick and the jumps are too small. More about marketing than what the product really is these days.

Cat, I’d say Apple ceased being a computer company when they changed their name to “Apple, Inc.” dropping the “Computer” in their name few years ago. They actually issued a press release to that effect…

Haven’t seen the specs on the new iPhone 5 yet. Not sure what it could have that would tempt me away from my iP4. I’m perfectly satisfied with the current camera, and no matter what they inflate the MP count to, it’ll never beat my Canon dSLRs and lenses for quality! I mostly use the phone camera for utilitarian purposes anyway.

…and you’re right, the flash is “useless!” LOL!

I would say that 4G with Sprint service is a lure (AT&T sux), but my GF upgraded her phone very late into the iP4 life-cycle, so since we share our plan that locks us into AT&T for another 20 months or so! *sigh*

Well, I can’t wait to see the new specs! I read an article where 41% of smart phone users plan on getting an iPhone 5. Many people surveyed planned on leaving Android and of course Blackberry users are in the middle of a mass exodus from their phone platform as well…

I’m actually more jazzed about the iPad3. At least there’s no contract locking me into the existing iPad2… And I know plenty of people who’ll buy my used one, dings and all!

since they’re on sprint I’ll probably look at it (don’t want to break my loyalty to sprint and give up my unlimited data). I’ll probably stick with my current rooted android phone, though.

Well, that was the most underwhelming press conference of all time.

    But I’m still debating…

I’d say the 4S model is for people who are still on 3GS models or earlier. Not sure it’s aimed at current 4 owners.

I hope the rumors are not true about iPhone 4s for VZW and AT&T now and iPhone 5 in a few months. Unless you go to BestBuy and get the upgrade plan. The other rumor is iPhone 5 exclusive for Sprint now, giving them the head start.

    Still debating too

There was another rumor that said the 4s would replace the 2.5 year old 3gs

    • Reply MaxMaxMax October 4, 2011 at 10:03 am

All three models are offered now:

      3GS for free
      4 for 99
      4S for 199/299/399

Hey Cat … as technologically ass-backwards as I am … I’m actually excited when the new stuff comes out … not because I want the new stuff … because now I can finally get all the old out-dated stuff that drops drastically in price …

… haha … maybe I’m ready for my first iPhone … yippee kiyay!!! …
