Cat Chat episode 4: Eats for guests

By Catherine Toth Fox • December 1, 2010 • Musings, The Daily Dish, Videos

‘Tis the season for weight gain, parking chaos and, of course, out-of-town guests.

And these guests often want to do one thing — beside bask in the sunshine that likely don’t have back in Wisconsin: eat.

So where do you take your visitors to nosh on local food?

Fellow Nonstop blogger Melissa Chang (@Melissa808 to a lot of you) put together a gallery last month of her favorite eateries to take out-of-town guests. On the list are staff favorites Shokudo Japanese Restaurant, Kaimuki Grill and Boots & Kimo.

So we thought it would be fun to get a rundown from Melissa herself on today’s Cat Chat.

Got a question? Got a better place to take out-of-town guests? Just got something to say? Post your comments here! And subscribe to Nonstop Honolulu on YouTube!

Thanks for stopping by!

must be the holidays because every blog is fuud day!!
for sushi, I’ve sent friends to Mitch’s and haven’t missed yet. of course, they’re all from LA or SF, so they’re already used to raw fish and some of the more traditional (read: funky) stuff.

Good choices. In Hilo if they want to eat Lau Lau, I take them to Kuhio Grill for the Kanak Attack. 1 lb lau lau, kalua and the works. Cafe100 or Koji’s for Loco Moco. Nori’s is a good place too. And must take them to Aunty’s place K’s Drive In especially for the twist cone.

BTW, you both look nice today.

@Ynaku KOJI’S! I miss that place! Is it still closed on weekends?

    • Reply matti2d November 30, 2010 at 11:52 pm

@Ynaku No Don’s Grill or Manono Mini Mart? those are my favorites

    • Reply Ynaku December 1, 2010 at 6:05 am

@Cat @Ynaku Koji’s closed on Sunday. Saturday is wide open since the Farmer’s Market is open behind them.

@matti2d DOH, how could I forget. 🙁 Don’s is my favorite and I take lots of people there. Manono Mini Mart is good too. Then over to Itsu’s for “Ice Shave” 🙂

I’ve also taken guests to Mr. Ojisan on Kapahulu, Maile’s Thai Bistro in Hawaii Kai, The Pineapple Room in Ala Moana Center and various lunch wagons — since those are uniquely local. 🙂

Melissa, great suggestions… let’s not forget places like Waiola, Rainbow’s, and yes, even Zippys.. (Zippys only because it’s such an icon in Hawaii) Cat, you’re turning into the Rachael Ray of Nonstop… (even got that same “raspy” voice. :o) Have a great day!

@NeilYamamoto oooh no Waiola for me! They are chintzy with the syrup!

I also have out of town guests very often. I always take them to Uncle Bo’s on Kapahulu, and they all love it there. Since it’s close to Waikiki some of them go back after I take them. My second choice is Haleiwa Joe’s… they always love the gardens at the Haiku location. And I take them for gourmet shaved ice at Shimazu’s on School Street.

@LariYasui Hi Lari! Yes, on my blog (please click the link & comment), I listed Uncle Bo’s as a place that was on the runner up list. Shimazu is also on there. 🙂

@nonstopmari I actually came in at the end, so no wine & sushi lunch!

    Hello Cat and Melissa!

    Great list!

  • Reply MaxMaxMax December 1, 2010 at 1:45 pm

Honestly honestly honestly… and I’m not just saying this because of the timely coincidence… I have taken many a visiting guest(s) to John Dominis! Sad to see it go!

I’ve also taken many to the old location of Eggs ‘n’ Things.

I’ve also found guests like Duke’s Canoe club. The waffle fries with mustard and ketchup is always a crowd pleaser, along with the live music on the beach!

My list is a little different, when I had friends in from out of town I took them to Rainbow drive In, Boston’s in Kailua, Haleiwa Joe’s Kaneohe, Crouching Lion, Kalapawai Market Kailua, the one on the beach, Buzz’s Steak House, Duk’s Bistro, and Hale Vietnam. And if they were buying Chef Mavro’s. If I was buying Porgy’s LOL. Love the food show stuff. Some of the kids in my class are headed to HNL for Christmas break and this is the list I gave them this morning.
