Imagine a slab of prime rib as big as a platter.
That’s what you’ll get at Haleiwa Joe’s in Haiku, a favorite neighborhood restaurant on the Windward side.
And the prime rib is so good, people wait outside the restaurant before it opens. (It’s first come, first served — and your entire party has to be there to be seated.) And everything you’ve read about it is true: the prime rib sells out, sometimes before the sun sets.
My family and Derek hadn’t been there before, so I couldn’t wait to see their reaction to the extra-large slab of meat.
But the restaurant does offer more than just this Flintstone’s cut of beef.
Here’s what our recent dinner looked like:
Thai-fried calamari
If you want a variety of appetizers, you won't be disappointed here. You can order everything from curried scallop cakes to crunchy coconut shrimp — and these Thai-fried calamari ($9.25). The calamari is lightly breaded and fried, then paired with a tangy Thai dipping sauce. Nice way to start our meal!
Haleiwa Joe’s, 46-336 Haiku in Kaneohe. Hours: Dinner starts at 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 5 p.m. Sunday; Sunday brunch starts at 10 a.m. Phone: (808) 247-6671

This is my favorite restaurant on the island. The food is always excellent, the view is great, and the wait staff first class. It was one of many things that made windward living worth it.
i know where i’m headed next time i’m back home

Last visit I was supposed to eat there but had run low on cash and they didn”t take AMex. Next time will have a different set up.
Love Haleiwa Joe’s, but wouldn’t recommend going in the summer. There were termites EVERYWHERE. They had flood lights down in the garden but the termites were still at the top eating with us. They even got into my salad.

Next time you’re in SF, try Alexander’s Steakhouse. Their tomahawk chop (I believe) is 64oz, before cooking, and will help you redefine your understanding of dinosaur.
