FUUD: Inferno's Wood Fire Pizza in Kalihi

By Catherine Toth Fox • December 10, 2010 • Food, Musings, The Daily Dish

It’s an unlikely place for a pizzeria.

But in a parking lot on the corner of Kalihi Street and Nimitz Highway, two guys are serving up some of the best pizza on the island. And baking them in an 800-degree, wood-fire oven on site.

Inferno’s Wood Fire Pizza opened in August to rave reviews, especially from fans online, where word about this unusual pizzeria is growing. People love the fresh ingredients, the thin crust and, yes, even the idea of sitting in a tent in a parking lot in industrial Kalihi eating a gourmet pie.

Here’s what our recent visit looked like:

thanks for the pizza pics. looks fantastic. Pizza in parking lot : saves money on rent. but on ultra rainy days like today, even under their tent, I prefer to be indoors.when I dine.

Wow good thing you went on Saturday night, more elaborate setup than weekday lunch. Gotta visit them again on the weekend then. Seems there are also a whole bunch of new specials that I didn’t see on the menu when I went or in Mari’s previous review, like the clams. The only one I tried so far is the all meat, which I thought was OK but a little salty. Gonna get that BBQ chicken next for some REAL “scarfing” haha.

@808marv Saturday night was awesome! Great pre- or post-event place. Different. And can BYOB. Brought wine and Diet Coke. Great night!

Was the one with clams to clammy or too garlicie?

    • Reply Cat December 10, 2010 at 11:14 am

@ChuckvonArnswaldt It could have had more garlic, actually. But that’s just me. 🙂

CAT: Aaaiiiyyyaaahhh! Fuud Pix! Tenks! Never been on a Sat nite but been there for lunch as it is close to work. Love the charcoal smokiness of the crust. The sauces don’t give me acid reflux like PH’s. Worth the price and way cheaper than CPK.

pizza is my Pavlovian food. if i see it or hear about it, i have to have it. i will go out in cold, wet weather, not stopping for an umbrella or a jacket or shoes and make a bee line for the nearest pizza joint. fortunately in the Bay Area, they are everywhere, and good ones too. i think half the people around here are Italian. my favorite has always been thin crust, mushrooms, black olives and pepperoni, lots of pepperoni. some people say pizza is an American dish. all the North Beach pizzeria owners make some kind of hand gesture under their chin and say something in Italian that is the equivalent of ‘Feh’ when that comes up in conversation. now i must bid you arrivederci and head for Luigi&Mama’s

I like their Marinara Sauce that they use. It’s slightly spicy which complements their Pizza very well. I also like the way their crust comes out puffy and partially burnt sometimes. More flavor and a lighter non-bread like crust.

Just got to fight for parking if one wants to go there since the parking is shared with the brick and mortar business there. I need to go back and try the Clam Pizza one day.

Man that looks so good, I’m a huge pizza fiend. I’ve said it before and I have no shame saying it again: I have GOT to get to Hawaii in the near future.
