If you had $1,000

By Catherine Toth Fox • March 13, 2012 • Musings, The Daily Dish

We all daydream about winning Megabucks — and, most importantly, what we’d do with the money.

A 71-year-old woman who recently won the Louisiana Lottery jackpot — $1,005,040 to be exact — said she plans to use some of the $700,000 she pockets after taxes on college tuition for her five grandchildren.

That seems noble. But I’m sure this granny won’t be storing the rest under her Tempur-Pedic.

While millions of dollars seem a lot easier to spend, what if you just won a thousand bucks?

Interestingly, it’s a lot harder to decide.

A thousand dollars doesn’t even buy the lowest-end MacBook Air (after taxes). I couldn’t even get a plane ticket to visit Derek in Madison, Wisc. over Spring Break.

So let’s say someone gave you $1,000 to spend. What would you buy?

Callaway RAZR Fit 3-Wood $259, Callaway 2,3 Tour Hybrids $318, NIke Method 1i Putter $155, Cleveland Tour Grind CG 15 64 degree wedge $99, And the rest in Titleist Pro V1x golfballs.

    See that wasn’t so hard…

      Whoa. You were prepared. 🙂

What is really bizarre to me is that I had played golf the day you posted this and was thinking I needed to upgrade my set. I came home, went shopping on line. My conclusion was I needed about a grand and when I had a spare grand this is what I would buy. So when I saw this I thought wow that is an easy one!

I’d pay my bills and save the rest for a “rainy day.”

I don’t even think that’s enough to pay my bills! At least a month’s worth of bills… Student loans kill me.

A nice DSLR camera to record my life before I die.

Speaking of which, I was just looking at a few DLSRs. I bought one for myself for Christmas — Canon EOS 60D — but now I want another compact camera. Can definitely get one for under $1,000.

See what you did! Now I want a new camera!

I would love to stay at the Aulani. So would that be just two nights (not including meals)?

    • Reply Catherine Toth March 15, 2012 at 1:30 am

Maybe! And probably not including parking, either!

I would pay some bills for the month to catch up, then donate the rest away to the Hawaii homeless or children in need kind of charity. They need it more than we do.

I like the way you think!

I like to think that I’d splurge but I’d probably just save it. that or whittle the amount down on smaller purchases (mostly of the fishing variety).
if I had to get a big ticket item, i’d wait to see what the pricepoint on the asus iconia A700 will be.

It’s really not enough to splurge, per se, or buy a big ticket item… But I think you could buy a lot of things for fishing purposes for $1,000!

“…storing the rest under her Tempur-pedic”? ummm…$700K…5 grandchildren through college…i don’t think she has enough!

Probably not. Unless the kids go to a state college. Or KCC!
