Merry Christmas to yourself

By Catherine Toth Fox • December 8, 2011 • Musings, The Daily Dish

A few years ago, my dad came up with an interesting idea.

In addition to pulling names for Secret Santa, our family buys one more gift: one for ourselves.

There’s no price limit. There are no restrictions. And you have to open it on Christmas morning.

At first, I thought it was a crazy idea. I wrapped something I already had and feigned surprise when I opened it that morning.

But over the years, I started to get it.

We spent a lot of time, effort and money buying things for other people — often buying things we want and would never get ourselves. So with my dad’s idea, we could actually buy something for ourselves — and not feel guilty about it.

So this year I splurged on myself. I got a Canon EOS 60D digital SLR — one that I’ve wanted for awhile now. I figured it was something I needed — I use some kind of camera several times a day — and really wanted.

So I did it. And I’m excited.

So if you could buy yourself a gift — you have to pay for it, remember! — what would you get yourself?

    Cat,

Your Dad’s idea is genius! I’ve shot the 40D, nice camera even for an old dyed-in-the-wool Nikon film man. Difficult to buy something for myself without feeling guilty about the money. As I get older, low-tech is beginning to become very attractive–think bicycle. Simple one with Ten gears tops, No skinny tires, just something for fun.

btw, Welcome back from the chillbox! Isn’t great going to a place where someone is waiting for you? Can’t beat it…

So does this mean your photos will have straight horizons from now on? 🙂

Merry Christmas to myself would involve a huge tv,lots of football and several cheerleaders “rooting” for the home team in my living room. Happy New Year to myself …..well, can never remember……

I’d buy myself a big girl’s camera too. I blog and feel so unprofessional going to interview a local shop owner and then I buss out the cutesy pink point & shoot. “Hey, can I …like take some pickchas?”

I also am camera challenged and want to take photography classes.Pre-requisite? A SLR.

That is a beauty you’ve picke out.
