Great Debate: pork chops at Manago Hotel

By Catherine Toth Fox • March 23, 2011 • Food, Musings, The Daily Dish, Videos

The other day I listened to two Honolulu foodies argue about the pork chops at the Manago Hotel.

One preferred them with gravy; the other declared that practically blasphemy.

So I decided to try it for myself.

Yesterday, en route to Honaunau, we stopped at the historic hotel in Captain Cook to try the famous pork chops and see what’s better — with or without gravy.

Here’s what the entire experience looked like:

i too prefer to bring the chop to the gravy, not the gravy to the chop. but i don’t hold my knife and fork in the continental manner as you do. i grab it by the handle like a dreamsicle and rip me off a big ol’ hunk. then i pick my teeth with the bone, and wear it in my nose till all the neighborhood dogs stop chasing me.

I’m kind of a gravy guy… especially if it’s mushroom gravy. I can appreciate a chop dry though — long as it isnt, well, dry. 🙂 Thanks for sharing, Cat!

    Hello Cat,

Got to try it next time I’m on the BI

  • Reply MerrisSmyles March 30, 2011 at 2:35 am

I say no gravy too. I add ketchup but it’s sooo juicy and yummy. It is a MUST visit every time I’m home on the BI.

You got the gravy, but you forgot the onions!

  • Reply johnheckathorn April 2, 2011 at 2:31 am

    Still good either way.
