Those horrible dance moves you do — you know, the Sprinkler, the Raise the Roof and the famous White Man Overbite — may not repel women as much as previously thought.
According to psychologists from Northumbria University in England, there are some moves that matter to women — and some that don’t.
Apparently, it’s the left wrist and the right knee that count. And women do notice your head and, ahem, lower body movements. (Here’s a list of the Top 10 Bad Dance Moves from AskMen.com.)
Researchers filmed 10 men dancing, then mapped their moves onto featureless avatars. (See the video below.) Then they had 35 heterosexual women rate the attractiveness of the dancing — not looks — to determine what women liked.

This video by researchers shows an avatar performing good and bad dance moves. Take notes.
Personally, I don’t judge a guy — or anyone, really — by the quality of dance moves. I could careless if a person could execute the Lawn Mower correctly. Sure, women like guys with swag (like Ne-Yo) — that indescribable coolness that only cool guys emit — but I’d rather have someone with a great sense of humor about his bad dancing than someone who’s just good at it.
Like this guy in the video below. Now we’re talking!

The Evolution of Dance — by a guy — which garnered more than 151 million hits on YouTube.
Got any bad dance move stories to share?

Cat, you should check out the student dance crew in the Manoa Maniac’s section at the UH Women’s (and probably Men’s next season) Volleyball game. First time I saw a bunch of students that are pretty much in sync with each other. They are quite entertaining and even get others in the arena to join them.
@harrycovair It’s like the old Bow-zos!
@Cat Better than the Bow-zo’s. I suspect that 2 or 3 of the “leaders” are off-duty Cheer/Song leaders. They set the rhythm and dance movement and the Maniac’s follow along. Really quite entertaining.
Pretty soon the Men’s Swim Team will be “dressed up” and cheering on Na Wahine. They usually show up during one of the first few matches of the start of the WAC season.
How do you dance to a Megadeath, Godsmack, or Metallica tune? You probably don’t. Just sit back, bob your head like a chicken, and let your body reverberate from the bass coming off the 50K watt speakers. \\m/
Guud morning Cat!
Dance moves to attract the ladies sounds silly to me…
LOL. I don’t know if I judge a guy by his dance moves or not (I’m pretty bad) but I would guess that a guy who’s willing to get out there and shed his inhibitions (within reason) is more attractive for me, too.
@Melissa808 For sure! I am a horrible dancer, but I enjoy doing it and making a fool out of myself. It’s more important that a guy looks like he’s having fun, whether or not he has the moves. I’m probably more attracted to a bad dancer has a smile on his face.
@jennalanger @Melissa808 Got a fortune once that said “you have to dance like no one is watching”. Just be yourself! *stands by wall, sipping on drink*
no bad dance stories. i enjoyed watching the videos especially the evolution of dance.
ahahaha! the freaking bad dancing 3d model made me LOL! It reminds me of a few of my friends, myself, of course, included. 😉 haha
The evolution of dance was freekin funny. Yes now you’ve made us men who barely dance won’t ever get on the dance floor again.
@Tommy Did you know that was the most viewed video on YouTube for a while? It has over 151 mil views! It’s a long one to watch, but worth seeing through to the end.
@jennalanger What’s the most viewed vid now…? “Charlie Bit Me!”
😉
i luvs it.
and this is coming from a guy who (probably) can’t dance (gives me hope). we asians (or maybe just me) tend to have a harder time with the ideas behind ‘beat’ and ‘rhythm’ and possibly even ‘coordination.’ well, unless you happen to be korean. or filipino. those suckas can dance.
@nakadane Have to disagree… have you watched America’s Best Dance Crew? Asians are always taking that contest… Those dudes from Qwest Crew are some of the best dancers I’ve ever seen.
LOL omg it’s been so long since I last watched the evolution of dance video. Brings back some memories of how I tried the sprinkler and smacked a friend in the face… oh good times LOL
Dancing is like singing…most of the talent is genetics. Some of us can take all the lessons and practice forever, but without the genes, no dice.
@Visitor except with singing you can turn up the music to drown out the bad voice 🙂
@jennalanger @Visitor and auto-tune. 🙂 There’s an app for that. Whoo!
Left wrist, Right Knee! That would explain Capt. Jack Sparrow’s Keith Richards swagger appeal. Well maybe not entirely, I mean it IS Johnny Depp.
evolution of dance! hilarious — i’m still clapping at the computer!
@nonstopmari The scary thing is that avatar dances better than most of my guy friends. 🙂
CAT,
to me the all time funny dance moves were done by Aoki-san in the original “Shall we Dance” from Japan. It is a classic. The American version was no where close to the original.
LOVES it! And I think most women love a guy who lets it all hang out when dancing. You’re right, Cat — it don’t matter if he’s got major skills. Just the willingness to have fun and go with the rhythm usually gets him a checkmark in the “endearing” column.
BTW, the guy in that video actually moves better than most of the guy students I’ve taught dance to over the years. Pretty freaking awesome!
