The last time I was in New York City was 12 years ago.
I was a graduate student at Northwestern University in Chicago and my friend and I decided to take a quick weekend jaunt to NYC to visit her sister.
Here’s what we did: we hung out in Harlem, we ate at Burger King (it was an unforgettable experience thanks to a ranting homeless guy), we made the pilgrimage to St. Patrick’s Church in uptown, we attended Mass in Spanish Harlem, I met some friends in the Village (yes, I caught the subway by myself — and at night!), we shopped at Sephora in Times Square, and we danced all night at Webster Hall.
That’s all I can remember.
I didn’t bring a camera, I didn’t take notes, I just hopped on a plane and went.
While I had a blast — it was a nice break from a brutal semester — I didn’t get to really experience the city the way I probably should have. I didn’t go to any art museums, I didn’t walk through Central Park, I didn’t even go to the top of the Empire State Building.
So this time around, I decided to add some touristy sights to my four-night stay in the city. I’m really here for no other reason than hang out and eat. (I know, good trip.)
Here’s what my first day in the city looked like:
Tom Yum Koong Soup

great start to the trip. my second favorite city (outside of hawaii) behind Tokyo and my favorite city to just hang out in. how was the traffic? we did the shuttle thing once, on our first trip there, then decided that rush hour traffic sucks and the subway was a better option from the airport.
you gotta try the halal cart someone posted about in your other post. make sure you go after ten pm, though. different crew of guys run the cart late at night.
Hello Cat!
Looks like you started off guud with great weather too!
Did you really bring a musubi to NYC? We have a couple of Hawaiian / plate lunch places.
I did! Where are these plate lunch places???
Been a couple of years since I was in the city, no longer have in-laws there, but I do like the place. This is a good time of year to be there. How can you not love a city where if you really want them you can find calzones at 4 am. With the 3 airports you can go anywhere for a reasonable price…. start spreading the news…
Hey Cat … thanks for the highlights … makes me realize my travel resume is so limited … *sigh* …
… I think I’d get lost in that jungle of a city …
Love your pics. New York today is so much safer than it was 25 years ago. Back then Times Square/42nd street looked like a ghost town and real creepy. Now it’s like Disneyland for adults. Much more safer to get around on the subway at night to get to all the great food in the city.
gotta get to the East Village…Om Nom Nom til you drop!
FYI. Proper name for Grand Central is Grand Central Terminal not Station.
