I didn’t know what to expect, really, when I hopped on Hawaiian Airlines’ inaugural flight to Taipei a week ago.
I didn’t know much about Taiwan or what it had to offer. But I was curious — and that curiosity led me to some of the most interesting, memorable experiences of my life.
Who would have thought I’d eat soup-filled dumplings in the basement of the world’s second-tallest building or chomp down on coagulated pig blood on a stick or watch Melissa Chang drink snake semen?
Though I wish I saw more of Taiwan — the mountains and coastlines, specifically — I felt like I learned a lot about this bustling city, modern but traditional, expansive but small-town. Thanks to our native hosts, Sara Lin and Bob Wu, who showed us the best their hometown had to offer.
Here’s what my last day in Taipei looked like:
Last day in Taipei
Thanks to everyone who followed my adventures in Taipei on Twitter @thedailydish and on Instagram @catherinetoth. And special thanks to Hawaiian Airlines for allowing me to be part of this special inaugural flight.

I can’t help thinking…..what would have happened if Typhoon Soulik had not hit, and we could have gone on the surf excursion? I know everything happens for a reason, but that one element has me wondering how our view of Taipei/Taiwan would be different if things had happened as planned. Glad I got to travel with you again, Cat!
Surfing would have been a cool activity. I have another suggestion, an extremely selfish one I might add, take me next time 🙂 But seriously, I think you guys should go back. Taroko Gorge is nice, surfing would be great, but a tour of the whole island is a must do. There is a lot to Taiwan outside of Taipei. You guys would love it. Sort of like going to Tokyo and not riding the Shinkanzen to Fukuoka and making a lot of stops for a day or two in the smaller cities. Or heading up to Sapporo area.
Anyways, thanks for the great trip blogs and photos. So Melissa, did you swallow?
CAT: Ok, I give up…is it just me or do the pix not match your post? These were posted earlier.
Whoops! I fixed it!
Hello Cat!
