It’s been so cold lately.
In fact, with the exception of last night, I’ve been wearing pajamas to bed every night and sleeping under three layers of blankets.
And it’s almost April!
So lately I’ve had a craving for ramen — that warm bowl of noodles is the perfect cold-weather dish.
My girlfriend suggested we try Menchanko Tei on Keeaumoku Street, which opened this location in May 2012. The original shop was founded in Hakata, Japan in 1980 by Akihide Yonehama, who then opened up shops in Fukuoka, Manhattan and Honolulu.
I hadn’t been since it opened here — there was a location in Waikiki — and I was eager to try something new.
So here’s what our recent lunch looked like:

Unusually cold here as well, wish I could have a piping hot bowl of ramen to ward it off. But three layers of blankets in HNL… auwee.
Got any good ramen shops there?
CAT: Aaaiiiyyyaaahhh! Fuud Pix! Tenks! Been meaning to try it but was waiting to see if it would last more than 6 months. I think the longest tenant(s) was a series of hostess bars. Is this one worthy as an entry for your ramen contest?

I wonder if it’s any different… People always say the food changes when restaurants move. I wonder how true that is.

What did you eat??
CAT: the hakata lunch special. Their dashi is guud. Went back the next day for a early dinner. Fuud is guud. However, they need to do a better job of cleaning the place..it is starting to look run down.

It was pretty good, though I need to go back and sample the other dishes. Like the nabe.
Two questions:
1.) What camera are you using for these Menchanko Tei photos?
2.) What plugin are you using for the photo slideshow feature?
I’ve been to Mechanko Tei’s location in the Waikiki Trade Center, when they were there. Oishii! They also featured Oden, one of my favorite Japanese “stews”.
Still gotta’ try that popular Udon shop on Kuhio Ave, in front of where Scruples used to be.
I could eat at Shirokiya’s new Yataimura food court EVERY SINGLE DAY, and never get sick of it!
Marukame? Hmm. It’s a bit overrated. I mean, it’s cheap, but it’s just OK.
As for my camera, I think I used my Canon PowerShot — a simple point-and-shoot.
I haven’t been to the new Yataimura — WILL GO THIS WEEK! Thanks for the suggestion!
