One of my favorite things about working in downtown was the bounty of lunch options.
Whatever you’re craving — pho, ahi poke, tomato bisque, carne asada burritos, crepes, vegetarian spanakopita — you can find in a four-block radius.
And when you’re in the mood for a pint of beer at lunch — because you’re having that kind of day — or homemade blueberry pie, you can head to Murphy’s Bar & Grill (@murphysdowntown) on the corner of Merchant and Nuuanu.
This longtime neighborhood pub has been a favorite lunch spot for years. But hardcore patrons know that on Fridays, owner Don Murphy pulls out his secret weapon: his wife’s homemade pies.
And they sell out fast.
Here’s what we had on a recent Friday, pies included:
Blueberry pie

Hello Cat!
Fuud pixs Friday! The fuud looks so guud there!
Food is good! Go next time you’re in town!
Used to work a BOH downtown and this was a favorite Friday afternoon stop. Pie and beer doesn’t work for me but a slice of chocolate cake and a beer isn’t too bad.
Hmm, maybe pie and beer aren’t the best combo. I used to work at one place in downtown that would schedule 3 p.m. meetings there on Friday. You can probably guess what we did!
The obvious answer includes beer… just wonder if the meeting was Murphy’s, Gordon Biersch, or my favorite Indigo’s. If you have never tried chocolate cake and beer it seriously is a good combo.
I’m not a big beer drinker, actually. Tequila, though… 🙂
🙂 Tequila… the ultimate social lubricant. My kingdom for a good margarita.
I love a good pie, but at Murphy’s it’s all about the bread pudding with Irish whiskey sauce and whipped cream! Sooooo gooooood. I would eat that AS lunch if I weren’t so far away. And if I weren’t worried there may be enough legit whiskey in the sauce (again, amazing) to be on the do-not-consume-while-pregnant list. Added bonus, the whipped cream is real whipped cream. As in whipped from heavy cream.
Yeah, but the whiskey is cooked, so it’s not REALLY there, right? (just kidding)
I do love the bread pudding. But Fridays are the only days you can get the homemade pie. And when we were there — which wasn’t at the peak of lunchtime either — the restaurant was down to single-digits of slices. You can get the bread pudding anytime. But the pies, gotta get ’em while they last!
i tried to visit your website early this morning, but it was inaccessible for some reason. and, i have to admit that i was bummed.
after reading your latest blog, i’m even more bummed. bummed that i never knew about all the delicious food at murphy’s bar and grill, and moreso, that i don’t work in downtown. everything there looks so delicious. my mouth is watering right now.
Aw, thanks for being bummed! I was, too, when I couldn’t post!
Hey, there’s always a reason to be in downtown on a Friday! Schedule a work meeting there and you’re good to go!
as the fuudies say:YUMMY! btw, do u try your irish accent when at Murphy’s? Find yourself saying: “top of the morning to ya sir”(even tho its 5pm)”another round of pints for me and my mates”, or is it just me……..
Maybe it’s just you. 🙂
uh oh…i’m in moderation again.
