I’m a big fan of food on a stick.
Hot dogs, teriyaki beef, chocolate-covered cheesecake — these things are meant to be skewered.
So whenever a new yakitori-ya (Japanese restaurant that serves skewered foods, particularly chicken), I make a mental note to plan a visit STAT.
That’s how I ended up at Yakitori Yoshi last night, a new yakitori-ya — well, it’s more like an izakaya than specifically a yakitori-ya — near Walmart on Keeaumoku Street.

The restaurant's interior retained the coolness of the previous tenants but doesn't have the vibe of authentic yakitori stand in Japan. Those tend to be small — no larger than an average-size bedroom — with a few stools and a cook grilling skewered foods. Yoshi is more like a chic izakaya that specializes in stick cuisine.

Although this place may be dressed up like a chic izakaya, the dishes they serve appear reminiscent of real Japan. I think the wife and i are going to have to try this place sometime. Until i saw the photo you took of the menu, I don’t think I had known a place in Hawaii that serves all the parts of the chicken (tail, back, etc.). In fact, the only place I had seen these parts was in the basement level of japanese department stores, which is basically a bigger version of Shirokiya’s second-floor food area (with even more delicious foods, like yakitori, okonomiyaki, fresh ama ebi, hamachi, chuutoro, …). Wow, my mouth just started watering.
Have you ever had chicken back? I was tempted to try it, but I had already over-ordered and couldn’t put another thing in my mouth.
