Postcards: The neighborhood coffee shop

By Catherine Toth Fox • August 30, 2011 • Postcards

Right around the corner from where Derek is staying in the Tenney-Lapham neighborhood a great little coffee shop called Johnson Public House (908 E. Johnson St., 608.347.0483). Intelligentsia coffee (brewed fresh to order), craft beers, sandwiches and, best of all, free WiFi.

    Cat,

Derek is lucky that he’ll acclimate to the Midwest. Actually lucky enough to see Fall colors. Madison has the advantage of having a lot of “eat places”, mainly because of UW. I thought the beef was especially good, probably because of the cold–promotes marbling. I wasn’t there long enough to miss plate lunches or spam musubis, but the hell Austin, MN is the next state over, I’m sure Spam must sell pretty cheap around there.

How’s this as a mid-afternoon or morning break in Sept or October, Blueberry cheesecake & a strong cup of coffee. Had this combo in March & it was gooood!

Oh, I miss autumn in the midwest… There’s nothing else like it.

And I should ask him about Spam. You’re right, I bet it’s cheaper than what we pay here. Then again, it might be in the pet food aisle!

    Cat,

Do you all get Intelligentsia coffee in the islands yet? If not you are missing out on a treat, and I am saying this to people who have the best coffee in the world in Hawaii. In any event , I imagine Derek will be logging some serious hours at the local coffee house, between good coffee, and free wifi, what more could you ask for when you are doing heavy research.

How are you holding up so far Cat? Let us readers know so we can make sure we are giving you the proper attention you deserve!

We have a spot — Beach Bum Cafe — that does intelligentsia coffee. Pretty cool. Makes me almost want to drink the stuff!

I’m holding up OK. My mom suspects it’ll hit me on Thursday. Brace yourself!

First clue this isn’t Hawaii… no coconut syrup! I can’t eat pancakes now without mixing coconut and regular syrup together…

Is this Madison’s version of Smorgy’s 🙂 No, I am not being serious….

      I was wondering…….

No need to wonder, I rarely am serious… unless the sky really really is falling.

nice. Does he like Race Cars? just outside of Madison, 20 miles east is a place called Sun Prairie. And they have a race track and the big season ending National Pepsi Championship Race is this Saturday. Huge event. The cars are open wheel racers called “midget race cars”. Very similar to those Sprint cars with the wings, (sans wings).Good fun. Angel Park SpeedWay, Sun Prairie.

Hmm. I don’t think Derek can get out there. Too far and he’s only got a bike!
