FUUD with foodies at Side Street Inn

By Catherine Toth Fox • March 18, 2011 • Food, Musings, The Daily Dish

The other day I got an e-mail from tech-geek extraordinaire Ryan Ozawa, asking if I’d like to attend a foodie meet-up at Side Street Inn.

He said one of the hosts of the wildly popular podcast “The Sporkful” — Mark Garrison — was coming through Honolulu from a food adventure in Japan and wanted to check out some local cuisine — with some local foodies.

He got me at “Side Street.”

So a bunch of us — including Nonstop’s Mari Taketa — met at the beloved dive on Hopaka Street to nosh on fried pork chops, fried rice, fried chicken — you get the idea.

Here’s what we ate:

i love SSI. i love everything about it. the landing strip brightness of the factory floor floods lighting up an alley with potholes big enough to swallow a pimped out escalade. the crowd out front, so well dressed, the girls in little black shifts and stilettos. the noise, different in every room.

i like to eat at the bar, because i’m usually alone, just arrived and hungry. fried rice, miso chicken, two big ass Kirins. the place always makes me feel like i’m where the action is. i always feel welcome, my every need attended to by great staff, even alone in my corner, from which i watch the folks of my beloved adopted Honolulu.

@Melissa808 gizzards. totally. fried and served with raw sliced potato and radishes is how my country boy father ate them.

Looks so good. Honolulu has all the back street spots. One thing we don’t have enough of on Maui. What a line up of guests, too. You guys are hot.

@jkarneges It’s a must-try for sure! Maybe @nonstopmari needs to add this to the list.

@turkfontaine We should have introduced the Mainlanders to karaoke in a restaurant setting… There was definitely enough alcohol to make that happen. 🙂
