FUUD: Cafe Sistina on King Street

By Catherine Toth Fox • March 11, 2011 • Musings, The Daily Dish

Who would have thought a meat lasagna and ragu bolognese would have been our last meals?

It almost was, had that 8.9-magnitude earthquake off Honshu, Japan generated a destructive tsunami that hit our Islands. (Luckily, it wasn’t too bad. Surges caused extensive damage to piers and boats docked at Keehi Small Boat Harbor and flooding on the Big Island and Maui.)

We had just been served our entrees when I got a text message about the earthquake, then reported as a 7.9-magnitude. I immediately got on Twitter and started posting whatever I could find online.

Then the earthquake magnitude was upgraded. Then we heard a tsunami hit the Japan coastline. Then we saw the video of the wave — and we knew this might be bad.

We inhaled the tirimisu, cleared the check and bolted out of the restaurant to pack and evacuate.

So here’s what was “almost” my last meal:

U!! almost ur last meal and u still find the mind space to post a blog! i was caught up in the horror of seeing those images from japan. feels close bc i’ve lived in different parts of the country, including tokyo and chiba, and cannot reconcile last nite’s images w/ what i know. anyway, kudos to u for taking my mind off all that for a while w/ ur unctuous pics.

Just recently moved from Hawaii Kai to St. Louis Heights… and I mean “just” recently, as of March 1. If the quake would have been a couple of weeks ago, I’d have to do the evacuation thing again like last year!

Been several years, but I’ve always like Cafe Sistina. I saw a local cooking show featuring Sistina about ten years ago. It was showing how the chef cooked with scissors as his main utensils… as in stirring the food in the pan, etc. Kinda strange, but good outcome!

‘ cleared the check and bolted out of the restaurant ‘ .. for a second there i thought you said you ‘bolted the check and cleared out of the restaurant ‘ not a good policy for a food blogger.

i stayed up watching NHK. for some reason i couldn’t get ch7, the english b’cast to load so i couldn’t read or understand anything. but the video’s said it all.

    Hello Cat!

    Fuud pixs Friday!

My boss called me before 9 and let me know to be ready to come in to work if he calls back after 10pm. The tsunami was upgraded and at 10:30 I’m still waiting so I tried to call him and text him but AT&T was shut down by then so I just waited till morning and went in at 5:30.

Planning on going SUP in the morning. Have a great weekend everyone!
